At least 13 people have reportedly been killed in air strikes across Gaza overnight as Israel launched a fresh wave of airstrikes in Gaza on the second day of its resumed offensive in the devastated Palestinian territory, the Associated Press reported. This follows a period of relative calm since the January 19 ceasefire, which paused the 18-month conflict.
The recent airstrikes, while less intense than the previous day's attacks that killed over 400 people, targeted various locations across Gaza. Reports indicate that three individuals were killed in an airstrike on a house in the Sabra suburb of Gaza City, while another strike in Beit Hanoun resulted in two deaths and left six injured.
Additional casualties occurred when an Israeli drone struck a tent near the al-Mawasi humanitarian zone, killing two civilians and injuring five, according to Palestinian sources. Mahmud Bassal, a spokesperson for Gaza’s civil defence agency, reported a higher toll of 13 since midnight, including casualties in Khan Younis. There were also reports of an Israeli drone targeting fishing boats off Gaza City.
The Israeli army said it targeted a Hamas military site, claiming the group was preparing to launch attacks into Israel. They also reported strikes on Hamas-controlled vessels. The strikes came after Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said fighting would resume "in full force", adding, "This is just the beginning." Israel and Hamas failed to agree how to take the January 19 ceasefire beyond an initial phase. The breakdown of the ceasefire occurred due to the failure of Israel and Hamas to agree on next phase of the deal.
