The Hyderabad City Police has launched a Women’s Mounted Unit, marking a first for the city. Announced by Commissioner C V Anand, the initiative brings ten trained women constables from the Armed Reserve (AR) into the mounted force. They completed a two-month training program at the Goshamahal Mounted Unit and will now handle duties including VIP movements, bandobust, and patrolling.
‘This step empowers women to take on frontline roles in policing,’ said Anand, noting that these officers will now be part of routine patrol teams. The police department is also expanding its dog squad, addressing the strain on its current team of 34 canines. The unit will grow to 54 dogs, trained at the Integrated Intelligence Training Academy (IITA) to assist in narcotics detection, explosives tracking, and criminal pursuit. A new committee has been formed to source high-quality breeds from across India.
With the upcoming construction of Osmania General Hospital, the Goshamahal Police Stadium’s stables and training grounds will shift to a new 11.5-acre facility. This site will house the City Security Wing, vehicle yard, stables, parade ground, and kennels for 60 dogs. Tenders will be finalized by September 8.
