Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad, V.C. Sajjanar, has raised concerns over the growing online threats faced by young girls due to social media misuse. According to him, smartphones, once seen as essential tools, are increasingly becoming a source of danger for many girls.

With the rise of social media usage, strangers are forming connections with young users, sometimes leading to serious consequences. Sajjanar noted that cybercriminals are creating fake accounts using photos of handsome young men or celebrities on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. They send friend requests to girls, who, trusting these profiles, often share personal photos and videos.

Once received, these criminals use the content for blackmail, demanding money or in-person meetings. Many victims, fearing damage to their reputation, feel unable to inform their families and undergo severe mental stress. Some have even taken extreme steps due to the pressure.

The police commissioner urged young girls not to fear or give in to blackmail. He advised them to immediately inform their parents, friends, or contact the police through dial 100 if faced with such threats. Sajjanar emphasized that police support is always available. He also encouraged parents to spend time monitoring their children’s online activities and be aware of who they interact with. He assured that the police will take strict legal action against offenders, including those using fake profiles, numbers, or VPNs. Girls are urged to remain alert on social media and come forward courageously if they face any form of harassment.
