In a bid to reduce road accidents, Hyderabad Police Commissioner C.V. Sajjanar has directed officials to strengthen road safety measures across the city. On Friday, a coordination meeting on road safety was held at the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), attended by Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Joel Davis, District Collector Harichandan Dasari, Khairatabad Zonal Commissioner Priyanka Alla, Transport Department Deputy Commissioner Ramesh, and other senior officials.
Commissioner Sajjanar emphasized that road safety is not the responsibility of a single department and requires coordinated efforts across all agencies to effectively prevent accidents. Officials were instructed to identify accident-prone “black spots” and immediately implement corrective measures, including modern barricading and divider systems.
He also highlighted the importance of raising awareness among students in schools and colleges about traffic rules. Measures for pedestrian safety, such as installing zebra crossings, are being implemented to ensure safe road crossings. Non-functional streetlights will be promptly repaired, as proper lighting plays a crucial role in accident prevention.
Officials reported that lane marking has been completed over 1,687.76 km of city roads, with 4,585 zebra crossings, 4,047 transverse bar markings, and 3,335 traffic signboards, including speed limits and U-turn indicators, already installed. Footpath repairs covering 212 km have been completed, and 15 out of 23 approved foot overbridges are operational.
As part of black spot mitigation, 42 out of 45 identified locations have been addressed. The Traffic Department will continue removing obstructions on footpaths to ensure pedestrian safety. Commissioner Sajjanar proposed monthly coordination meetings on the second Friday to review progress and implement further measures. Representatives from UNICEF, R&B, TGSRTC, NHAI, MoRTH, and several NGOs also participated in the meeting.
