In a major development for Andhra Pradesh’s technology sector, global tech giant IBM is set to resume operations in Visakhapatnam after a gap of nearly six years. The move is being seen as a significant boost to the state’s efforts to position itself as a leading technology hub.

State IT and Electronics Minister Nara Lokesh confirmed the development by sharing an image of IBM’s signage in Visakhapatnam on social media, welcoming the company back to the city. He noted that IBM’s return would strengthen Visakhapatnam’s growing IT ecosystem and enhance its profile as an emerging destination for global technology firms.

IBM India Private Limited has already registered its operations with the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) in Visakhapatnam. According to officials, the company is expected to generate employment for over 500 professionals in the initial phase, with plans to scale up operations in the coming years. The company is also targeting exports worth approximately ₹321 crore over the next three years, indicating a strong business outlook.

The development is closely linked to the Andhra Pradesh government’s proactive investment outreach. Earlier this year, during the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Minister Lokesh held discussions with IBM CEO Arvind Krishna, showcasing the state’s investment potential, infrastructure, and policy support for the technology sector. Officials indicate that these engagements played a key role in IBM’s decision to re-enter Visakhapatnam.

IBM had previously operated from the IT Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Madhurawada before scaling down its presence. Its return is expected to revive momentum in the region’s IT landscape and attract further investments from multinational companies.
