Ice cream industry rebounds, thanks to heat wave

After two consecutive summers marred by unseasonal rains, India’s ice cream industry is finally experiencing a strong rebound, thanks to the scorching heatwave sweeping across the country this year. Record-breaking temperatures have triggered a sharp surge in demand, with many companies reporting 30-40% growth in sales compared to last year. From neighborhood kirana stores to quick-commerce platforms, ice creams are selling out within hours, turning the traditionally weather-dependent sector into one of the biggest winners of the brutal summer of 2026.

Sudhir Shah, President of the Indian Ice Cream Manufacturers’ Association (IICMA), said the current summer has completely transformed industry sentiment. “Over the last two years, unseasonal rains had severely hit consumption. This year, the intense heat has driven strong demand in both urban and rural markets,” he noted. Manufacturers are responding with innovative summer-centric products such as raw mango sorbets, tender coconut desserts, fruit shots, and cooling flavors, which are seeing enthusiastic response, especially from younger consumers seeking lighter and hydrating options.

While rural markets are driving demand for affordable sticks and cups, urban buyers are opting for premium family packs and fruit-based variants. However, the sudden spike has put the industry under pressure. Many companies, cautious after previous uncertain seasons, delayed capacity expansion, leading to near 100% utilization at production facilities. Stock-outs have become common as inventory rotates rapidly, and supply chain disruptions have added to the challenges.
