In a major push for sustainability, the International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIITH) planted 1,200 saplings across its 66-acre campus in Gachibowli on Saturday. The initiative was executed in collaboration with the Sustainable Green Initiative (SGI), and supported by global partners One Tree Planted USA and FedEx USA.

IIITH’s ongoing efforts to create an environmentally conscious campus include maintaining over 2,000 mature trees, deploying rainwater harvesting systems, and using Wi-SUN smart street lighting. The institute has also adopted intelligent resource monitoring and operates as a plastic-free zone, reflecting its broader eco-friendly ethos.

Speaking on the occasion, an IIITH spokesperson said supporting SGI was a natural continuation of their annual plantation programs and institutional values. “This initiative deepens our ecological footprint while motivating others to take action,” they said. SGI, which works extensively to restore Hyderabad’s green cover, called for greater collaboration among academic institutions, corporations, and civil society. A representative noted that such partnerships are essential to reversing environmental degradation in urban areas.

Both IIITH and SGI expressed hope that the drive would inspire similar efforts across Hyderabad and India, highlighting the role of communities in shaping a greener future.
