NVS Reddy, Managing Director of Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL), highlighted the critical role of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in driving sustainable urban development. Speaking at the ‘Sustainable and Green Cities’ meet in Hyderabad, organized by IIT Madras alumni, Reddy called for stronger collaboration between government bodies, industries, and research institutions.
As urbanization rapidly grows, Reddy emphasized the need for well-planned infrastructure, including eco-friendly public transport, waste management, water conservation, flood control, and affordable housing. He stressed that joint efforts are essential to create resilient, long-term urban spaces. Reddy showcased the Hyderabad Metro as an example of success, noting its use of cutting-edge technology and energy-efficient innovations. The metro has won over 350 national and international awards for its eco-friendly design.
He also urged IITs to play a larger role in developing technology-driven, sustainable solutions for urban infrastructure, particularly in upcoming Metro Rail expansion projects. The event was attended by industry leaders, startup CEOs, and IIT Madras faculty, including Director Prof. V Kamakoti. Reddy concluded by urging all stakeholders to anticipate future challenges and plan large-scale infrastructure projects with IITs as key collaborators in shaping India’s sustainable urban future.
