Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday described the India-EU free trade agreement (FTA) as a blueprint for shared prosperity and a stabilizing force at a time when the global order is facing significant turbulence.
Speaking at a joint press conference with European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen following the successful conclusion of the FTA negotiations, Modi said, “This is not just a trade agreement. This is a new blueprint for shared prosperity.” He noted that the India-EU FTA is the largest free trade deal in India’s history, reflecting the country’s growing role in global economic and strategic affairs.
Modi highlighted that the agreement will deepen cooperation between India and the EU not only in trade and investment but also in strategic areas such as the maritime sector and cybersecurity. “India-EU will provide stability to the world order. India-EU cooperation is a partnership for global good,” he added, underlining the broader significance of the pact beyond economic interests.
Costa described the India-EU FTA as the most ambitious agreement ever negotiated for a combined market of two billion people. He said the summit sends a strong message to the world that India and the EU are reliable partners. Costa also expressed hope that India would play a constructive role in facilitating peace in Ukraine through dialogue and diplomacy.
Leyen emphasized that the partnership will help reduce strategic dependency at a time when global trade is increasingly being weaponized. “We are delivering security for our people in an increasingly insecure world,” she said, adding that India’s rise on the global stage is welcomed by Europe.
The FTA is expected to strengthen economic, strategic, and technological ties between India and the EU, reinforcing their role as collaborative players in shaping global stability, resilience, and shared prosperity.
