President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were among the top dignitaries who paid homage to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at his residence here on Friday.

Prime Minister Modi, who also laid a wreath, described his predecessor's death as a big loss to the nation, asserting that his commitment to the people and for the country's development would always be respected.

Several leaders cutting across party lines, including Union ministers and Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, also paid their tributes to the former two-term prime minister who died on Thursday night.

Singh, the architect of India's economic reforms and a consensus builder in the rough world of politics, died at AIIMS, Delhi, late on Thursday. He was 92. He is survived by his wife and three daughters.

The Union cabinet at its meeting held under PM Modi also condoled Singh's passing and hailed him as an eminent statesman and a distinguished leader who left an imprint on national life.

Draped in the Tricolour, Singh's body was brought to his 3, Motilal Nehru Road, residence -- the sprawling bungalow in Lutyens' Delhi that served as his retirement abode for the last over 10 years ever since he relinquished charge as prime minister.

Several leaders paid their last respects to the former prime minister in the presence of his wife Gursharan Kaur and other family members. Singh would be cremated on Saturday and his final journey will commence from the AICC headquarters at 9.30 am on Saturday, Congress general secretary K C Venugopal said.

Union ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh, and BJP president J P Nadda also paid their tributes to Singh. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu and Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy also came to Delhi to pay their last respects to the former prime minister.

Narendra Modi

India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Rising from humble origins, he rose to become a respected economist. He served in various government positions as well, including as Finance Minister, leaving a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years. His interventions in Parliament were also insightful. As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives.

Rahul Gandhi

Manmohan Singh Ji led India with immense wisdom and integrity. His humility and deep understanding of economics inspired the nation.

My heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Kaur and the family.

I have lost a mentor and guide. Millions of us who admired him will remember him with the utmost pride.

Revanth Reddy

One of the greatest economists, leaders, reformer, and above all, a humanitarian of our times

Shri #ManmohanSingh ji is no more.

A man of virtue, impeccable integrity, marked above all by a humane touch in decision making, Dr Singh is one of true architects of new India.

He showed how decency and class are much needed aspects of political & public life. He is a legend in whose passing away, India has lost a great son.

Truly, in his own words, history will treat him far more kindly, and respectfully, than his own times perhaps did.

My prayers and deepest condolence for the bereaved family members.

Bharat mourns the demise of a great statesman, a visionary economist, a man of humility , intellect and a former Prime Minister, Padma Vibhushan Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. His leadership transformed the nation’s trajectory. As Finance Minister under Prime Minister Sri PV Narasimha Rao Ji, he introduced the landmark LPG (Liberalization, Privatization, and Globalization) reforms that laid the foundation for a modern and progressive Bharat.

The Sri PV Narasimha Rao - Sri Manmohan Singh duo navigated the country out of economic crisis, restoring stability and making Bharat a global growth engine.

It is a huge loss for India. And a personal loss for me. R.I.P.

He was a combination of sharp intellect, innate modesty and personal integrity, which is rare in politics.

I have no doubt that he will go down in history as one of the great political leaders not just of India but of the world
