Inflow to Srisailam receding due to reduced inflow

Officials managing the Srisailam Reservoir said on Monday that the inflow is receding as the flooding from Jurala and Sunkesula projects is also coming down. At present 68,856 cusecs of water from Jurala and Sunkesula projects is reaching Srisailam reservoir. The outflow of Srisailam is 1,15,662 cusecs. 20,000 cusecs are being released from Potireddipadu; 35,315 cusecs from left bank and 33,144 cusecs from right bank power stations.

A spillway gate is being lifted and 27,203 cusecs of water is being released to Nagarjuna Sagar. The water level in Srisailam has reached 883 as against a full level of 885 feet. The total water storage capacity of the project is 215 TMCs and at present it is 205 TMCs. Normally, the gates of the Srisailam reservoir are usually opened by the end of August or in the first week of September. The flood flow has been heavy as there has been an abundance of rains from upper areas since June this year.

In the water year that started from June 1st, 125 TMC of water flowed into the Srisailam reservoir till July 5. The average of the last 15 years was 12.26 TMC for this period. Last year, the gates were lifted on July 30th where as they were opened three weeks before,on July 8th this year which is the first time. CM Chandrababu Naidu gave“jalaharati”to River Krishna and lifted the gates of the reservoir to release water to Nagarjuna Sagar.Thousands of tourists visited the dam to see the scenery of river flowing down.
