After two months of relative calm in the war that began more than 17 months ago, Gazans were again fleeing for their lives after Israel effectively abandoned a ceasefire by launching a new all-out air and ground campaign since Tuesday against militant group Hamas.

Israeli strikes across the southern Gaza Strip killed at least 19 Palestinians overnight, including a senior Hamas political leader Salah al-Bardaweel and his wife, pro-Hamas media said on Sunday. Hamas said al-Bardaweel was a member of its political bureau and of the Palestinian parliament.

The Iran-backed Islamist militant group accused Israel of assassinating Bardaweel, who it said, was offering prayers along with his wife when an Israeli missile struck their tent shelter in Khan Younis. "His blood, that of his wife and martyrs, will remain fuelling the battle of liberation and independence. The criminal enemy will not break our determination and will," said the group. Israeli officials had no immediate comment.

Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen who are allied with Hamas meanwhile launched another missile at Israel, setting off air raid sirens. The Israeli military said the projectile was intercepted, and there were no reports of casualties or damage.

The attacks came after Israel carried out a strike in Tyre, south Lebanon, on Saturday, killing one and wounding seven people and endangering the shaky truce that ended a year-long conflict against Hezbollah, The attacks have resumed even as 40 survivors of Hamas captivity  and  civilians in Israel called on the Israeli government to halt the “endless war”.

Hamas has accused Israel of breaking the terms of the January ceasefire agreement by refusing to begin negotiations for an end to the war and a withdrawal of its troops from Gaza. But Hamas has said it is still willing to negotiate and was studying "bridging" proposals from U.S. President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff.
