Karnataka government on Wednesday handed over four kunki elephants to the state of Andhra Pradesh. While a total of six kunki elephants were to be given, the Karnataka government informed that two elephants would be handed over on another occasion.
The Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shiva Kumar and Minister for Forest and Environment Eshwar Kandre presented the kunki elephants to the forest officials of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah handed over the documents related to the agreements for the handing over of kunki elephants, the licenses and the modalities for their conservation to Deputy Chief Minister of AP Pawan Kalyan. After performing “Gaja Puja” in a ceremonial manner, the leaders of the Government of Karnataka hoisted the flag and greeted the kunkis while Pawan Kalyan welcomed them by showering flowers.
The kunki elephants are named Deva, Krishna, Abhimanyu and Mahendra. The mahouts from Karnataka will stay with the kunki elephants for two months and train the mahouts of Andhra Pradesh on their conservation and other aspects. The Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah has made it clear that he is ready to provide more elephants in the future as per the requirements of Andhra Pradesh.
