The land acquisition for the countruction work of Alluri Seetharama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram in Vizianagaram district is progressing at a rapid pace. GMR group has taken up the works at a cost of Rs 4,650 crore under the first phase. Though the company has announced that it will be completed by June 2026, the government is providing infrastructure with the intention of completing it by January.
60.08 acres of land has been acquired in four villages of Bhogapuram mandal for the connecting road from NH 16 to the airport. Of this, owners of 20.22 acres were compensated. Similarly, a compensation of Rs 19.89 crore, which was to be paid to 45 people in respect of 39.86 acres of land in Savaravilli limits, was deposited in the court. Last month, farmers had handed over 1.11 acres of land for the construction of a road up to land parcel-1 at Munjeru for which they will get a compensation of Rs 71.25 lakh.
24.30 acres have been identified for the construction of a residential complex for the airport staff at Basavapalem. On the other hand, 4.50 acres of land has been acquired for the construction of the 132/33 KV power sub-station, for which the government has to release Rs 70.21 crore. 19.75 acres of land has been acquired for the construction of the trumpet from the national highway to the airport. The government will pay Rs 14.43 crore as compensation.
Some more land requires Rs 22 crore. The Rural Water Supply Department(RWS) has already completed the trial run to supply 1.7 MLD of water daily in Phase-I from the first week of March. GMR has appealed to the government that it needs 3.3 LMDs in Phase-II. Accordingly, the government has decided to supply from the Tarakarama Theertha Sagar project.
