The Telangana Government is in the final stages of preparation to conduct local body elections, with the election schedule expected to be released by the end of this month. As per the preliminary plan, MPTC and ZPTC elections will be conducted first, followed by Sarpanch and Municipal elections. A decision on the exact dates is likely to be taken in state cabinet meeting slated on Monday
Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, addressing party leaders from Paleru constituency in Khammam district, urged local leaders to resolve minor issues in their respective areas and gear up for elections. He stressed that candidates with better winning chances, based on existing BC, SC, ST reservations, will be given preference. While MPTC/ZPTC polls will be held on party symbol, Sarpanch elections will be non-party based.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has already given clear instructions to ministers, MLAs, and MLCs to ensure a clean sweep for the Congress. He emphasized intensifying development works, finalizing deserving beneficiaries for welfare schemes like Rythu Bharosa and Indiramma Housing, and ensuring grassroots outreach of government programs, Ponguleti said.
The State Election Commission has been directed to be ready, and preparatory works such as voter list revisions and polling material arrangements are already underway. The government has decided to follow existing reservation norms, as the bill to increase BC reservations to 42% is still pending Presidential assent. However, the Congress plans to allocate 42% tickets to BCs at the party level, compensating through open category seats wherever needed, Minister stated.
The Chief Minister has made it clear that local body elections are a crucial performance test for the government, instructing public representatives to coordinate with in-charge ministers and ensure every village is covered. The Minister also urged party leaders to avoid internal conflicts and focus on disciplined candidate selection.
Party committees at the village, mandal, and district levels will be formed to oversee campaign planning and candidate selection, with all elected representatives actively involved in outreach and development initiatives.
