A 23-year-old Sudanese patient, Mohammad Ahmed Ali, has regained normal jaw movement after living more than four years with severely restricted mouth opening caused by Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) ankylosis.
The life-changing surgery was performed at Medicover Hospitals, Hitech City, by the Department of Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery under Dr. Sharath Babu C, Senior Consultant and Head of the Department, and Senior Maxillofacial Surgeon Dr. Naveen Kokkula.
The medical team used a custom 3D-printed TMJ prosthesis to replace the fused joint - a rare condition in which the jawbone becomes attached to the skull base, limiting movement and complicating daily activities.
Traditional approaches carry challenges, including the risk of facial nerve injury, so doctors opted for a personalized, digitally planned solution. ‘The fused joint was carefully removed and replaced with a tailor-made implant that restores natural motion,’ said Dr. Sharath Babu C. The patient showed rapid improvement, comfortably opening his mouth and eating soon after surgery.
