Medicover Cancer Institute, Hitech City on Wednesday successfully treated a 31-year-old Somalian diagnosed with a large and complex brain Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) using advanced Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS). The case was managed by a multidisciplinary team of neurosurgeons and radiation oncology experts at Medicover Cancer Institute. The patient had been experiencing recurrent headaches and seizures for nearly a year—symptoms that many individuals often dismiss or attribute to stress or hormonal imbalances.

An MRI revealed a 5.5 cm AVM located in the left temporo-parietal region, an area where open surgery carries significant risk to speech, memory, and motor functions. Given the complexity and the patient’s reluctance to undergo invasive surgery, the team opted for Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) as the safest and most precise treatment option. He received 30 Gy in 5 fractions in October 2025, a targeted treatment that eliminates abnormal vessels while protecting surrounding healthy brain tissue.

Following treatment, the patient reported marked improvement, including a substantial reduction in headaches and seizure episodes, allowing her to resume normal daily activities. Dr. Kavita Vasireddy, Radiation Oncologist at the hospital mentioned that headaches, dizziness, and seizures are often ignored until they disrupt daily life, especially working women who often attribute these problems to stress or routine fatigue.

She added that with advanced technologies like Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), complex brain conditions can now be treated safely, effectively, and without invasive surgery.  She urged the public to seek timely medical attention for persistent headaches or unexplained neurological symptoms. “Early diagnosis and access to modern treatment options can prevent complications and dramatically improve quality of life.” she said.
