Millions unaware they have Hepatitis: CARE Doctors

This year's World Hepatitis Day on July 28 is being observed under the World Health Organization (WHO) theme, "Hepatitis: Let's Break It Down," highlighting the urgent need to remove barriers to testing, vaccination, treatment and care. On the occasion of World Hepatitis Day, specialists at CARE Hospitals cautioned that the lack of awareness and delayed diagnosis remain the biggest obstacles in preventing hepatitis-related liver disease in India. Many patients continue to reach advanced liver care centres only after developing jaundice, abdominal swelling, gastrointestinal bleeding, confusion due to liver failure, or liver cancer—when treatment becomes more complex and outcomes are less favourable. 

Dr. Akash Chaudhary, Clinical Director and Sr. Consultant, Medical Gastroenterology, CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad stated that Hepatitis B can be effectively prevented through vaccination, while Hepatitis C can now be cured in the vast majority of patients with modern antiviral medicines The specialists also urged people to avoid sharing razors, toothbrushes or needles, ensure that tattoos and piercings are performed using sterile equipment, and practice safe hygiene and food habits to reduce the risk of hepatitis transmission.
