In a deeply moving story that resonated across the country, a one-year-old girl suffering from a rare genetic disorder has been given a new lease on life, thanks to collective public support, advanced medical care, and timely intervention by Andhra Pradesh Minister Nara Lokesh.

Punarvika, an infant from Veldurthi in Kurnool district, was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA Type-1), a life-threatening condition that progressively weakens muscles and severely limits movement. Medical experts had advised that her only chance of survival was a single-dose genetherapy, Zolgensma, considered one of the most expensive treatments in the world, costing nearly Rs 16 crore.

Her story quickly gained national attention, with a widespread “Save Punarvika” campaign drawing contributions from thousands of donors. By February, nearly Rs 10 crore had been raised through crowdfunding efforts. However, a substantial financial gap still remained, putting the child’s treatment at risk.

At this critical juncture, Minister Nara Lokesh stepped in, assuring the family of complete support and committing to bridge the remaining financial requirement. Acting swiftly, he facilitated the import of the high-cost gene therapy from the United States and coordinated closely with pharmaceutical authorities, hospital officials, and regulatory agencies to ensure timely delivery.

The life-saving injection was successfully administered at Rainbow Children’s Hospital in Jubilee Hills on Saturday morning. Lokesh personally visited the hospital and was present during the crucial procedure, interacting with doctors and overseeing final arrangements.

Following the treatment, the minister met the medical team to understand the child’s condition and future care plan. In an emotional moment, he was seen comforting the infant and reassuring her anxious parents.

Speaking on the occasion, Lokesh highlighted the power of collective goodwill. “This is not just one effort, it is the result of compassion shown by thousands of people. Together, we have given this child a second chance at life,” he said.

Punarvika’s parents, Suresh Kumar and Pushpavathi, expressed profound gratitude, calling the moment a “rebirth” for their daughter. The minister’s office played a pivotal role in expediting documentation, approvals, logistics, and payment processes, ensuring that no time was lost in administering the critical treatment.
