In a remarkable story of survival, 11-month-old Gajarla Mokshith recovered from acute fulminant viral myocarditis, a rare and severe heart inflammation - thanks to rapid intervention by the team at Ankura Hospital, Kukatpally.

Admitted on June 2 with cold, cough, and breathing difficulty, Mokshith showed signs of severe heart failure and life-threatening arrhythmias. Despite being born healthy, he experienced pulseless ventricular tachycardia and multiple cardiac arrests. Emergency CPR, defibrillation, and ventilation were initiated immediately by Dr. Tanzila, Dr. Sujith T, and Dr. Naveed.

As his heart function worsened, doctors placed him on Veno-Arterial ECMO—a life-support system that temporarily replaces heart and lung function. Cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Thomas Matthew performed the procedure successfully. Mokshith also tested positive for COVID-19 and developed blood clots, both managed by the multidisciplinary team.

He received IVIG, steroids, antibiotics, antiarrhythmic drugs, and anticoagulants, along with multiple transfusions. After five days on ECMO, his heart function steadily improved. By June 19, he was discharged with 67% ejection fraction and under specialist follow-up. Mokshith’s recovery highlights the power of timely, collaborative paediatric critical care and showcases Ankura Hospital’s advanced capabilities in handling complex paediatric emergencies.
