A festive celebration turned into tragedy on Saturday night after heavy lighting poles collapsed during a Dandiya event at MVSR Engineering College in Nadergul, leaving a female student dead and at least 12 others injured. The deceased student has been identified as Sony, a native of Wanaparthy.

According to eyewitnesses, the sudden collapse of the heavy metal lighting structures during the event triggered panic and a frantic rush among the attendees.

College staff and bystanders quickly responded, pulling the victims from the debris and rushing them to nearby private hospitals in LB Nagar and Adibatla.

At least seven students remain in critical condition, including Sony’s sister, who was shifted to a super specialty hospital as her condition worsened overnight. The Adibatla police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the cause of the structural failure.

Meanwhile, student groups and family members have alleged gross negligence on the part of the college administration and event organisers, demanding strict legal action and accountability for the safety lapses.
