The Managing Director of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), Ashok Reddy, has directed officials to immediately begin construction of the proposed Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Neknampur. During his inspection at Ibrahim Cheruvu on Monday, where the plant will be developed under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme, he stressed the need to complete soil testing and other preliminary works without delay.
The project aims to divert sewage flowing from Malkam Cheruvu into Ibrahim Cheruvu, treat it at the STP, and release purified water back into the lake, improving water quality and supporting ecological restoration.
Officials were also instructed to plan a stormwater box drain from Neknampur Cheruvu to Ibrahim Cheruvu, along with trunk sewer mains on both sides. A comprehensive master plan will be prepared to divert sewage from surrounding areas such as Manikonda, Lanco Hills, and Puppalaguda to the STP. To promote reuse, the MD suggested establishing a tanker filling station at the site for supplying treated water for construction and gardening. He also called for a DPR to lay pipelines along the Outer Ring Road to supply treated water for landscaping.
The Neknampur STP is part of a wider AMRUT 2.0 plan involving 39 STPs with a total capacity of 972 MLD at a cost of Rs 3,849.10 crore.
