The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will discontinue the mandatory Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for all new car, jeep, and van FASTag issuances from February 1, 2026, aiming to make toll operations smoother and reduce post-activation hassles for vehicle owners.
The move comes as a relief to lakhs of highway users who often faced delays and inconvenience due to KYV checks after FASTag activation, despite possessing valid vehicle documents, NHAI said in a statement.
For existing FASTags issued to cars, KYV will no longer be a routine requirement. The process will now be triggered only in exceptional cases, such as complaints regarding loose FASTags, incorrect issuance, or misuse. In the absence of any complaint, vehicle owners will not need to undergo KYV for existing FASTags.
NHAI also noted that pre-activation validation by issuer banks has been strengthened. Banks are now required to carry out mandatory VAHAN-based verification before FASTag activation, ensuring accuracy and reducing post-issuance issues.
This reform is expected to simplify FASTag issuance and enhance convenience for road users while maintaining security and compliance standards.
