NITI Aayog has given the green signal to modernize Vijayawada railway station to cater to the needs of commuters whose number will increase over the next three decades. The railway station will be developed under Public Private Partnership(PPP) mode at a cost of Rs 850 crore as it has been recently included in Category-I. At present, 1.14 lakh passengers per day and 9,120 passengers per hour during peak hours are plying from the railway station. By 2061, it is expected to reach 2 lakh per day.
Accordingly,20,000 passengers will be accommodated at a time during peak hours. Vijayawada MP Kesineni Sivanath said that the new railway station will also expand its operations towards the west while the development is currently taking place only towards the main route. Vijayawada railway station, which is currently included in the NSG-1 list, has an area of 12,538 square metres. It will be expanded to 1.54 lakh square metres. Of this, the station will be 84,000 square meters and commercial complexes, including hotels, will be spread over an area of 70,000 square meters.
The parking area currently has a capacity to hold 426 cars, which will increase to 1,700 cars. Lifts will be increased from 08 to 35 and escalators from 9 to 30. Foot overbridges will be expanded and the number of platforms will increase from 10 to 12..More than 250 passenger trains and 80 goods carts ply daily from the station, which has 10 platforms.
