80% of healthcare needs do not require hospitals: Dr Shyam

Senior endocrinologist and founder of Idea Clinics Dr Shyam Kalavalapalli said on Wednesday that over 80% of healthcare needs would not be requiring a hospital. Speaking at a conference titled 'Building for Bharat, India's Healthcare 2030' organized by Idea Clinics, he said that by 2035, the hospitals would become much less relevant. Telangana Tourism Chairman Patel Ramesh Reddy was the chief guest at the event.

Dr Shyam Kalavalapalli said that apart from major surgeries and emergencies, most care can be provided at home by using modern technology. Explaining how hospitals can evolve into virtual care hubs, he stated that the digital transformation seen in sectors like finance and retail was now entering the healthcare sector also. He informed that the special panel of expert doctors would also address emerging endocrine health challenges. 

He mentioned that there is a high incidence of diabetes, thyroid disorders, cancers, and obesity in India's urban population, especially the youngsters. Senior endocrinologist Prof.Rakesh Sahay said that endocrine disruptors, pollution, plastics, and harmful chemicals found in everyday consumer products were disrupting hormonal health.
