The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has stepped up its anti-larval operations across the city to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne diseases during the monsoon. Under the supervision of Commissioner R.V. Karnan, the drive covered more than 15,500 colonies in July alone.
As part of the effort, over 34.45 lakh households underwent two to three rounds of inspections by GHMC teams. Only 1.5% of these homes were found with mosquito larvae. In addition, out of 1.10 crore containers checked, just 0.5% showed larval presence. GHMC also launched door-to-door awareness campaigns, distributing precautionary pamphlets to educate residents on mosquito prevention methods.
Special focus was given to educational institutions, with awareness drives and indoor residual spraying (IRS) conducted in over 1,700 schools and 320 colleges. The commissioner is personally monitoring the situation daily and has directed officials to address operational gaps promptly.
Officials reported a noticeable drop in vector-borne disease cases this season compared to previous years, attributing the improvement to the intensified operations. GHMC plans to continue these efforts and urged citizens to cooperate by maintaining cleanliness in and around their homes.
