The government has announced that over 31.38 crore unorganised workers have registered on the e-Shram portal, a national database aimed at supporting India’s informal workforce, Parliament was informed on Thursday.
Launched on August 26, 2021, the e-Shram portal allows workers to create a Universal Account Number (UAN) on a self-declaration basis, using their Aadhaar details. It serves as a comprehensive National Database of Unorganised Workers (NDUW), enabling workers to access social security benefits and schemes under a single platform.
In line with the Budget 2024-25 vision, the Ministry of Labour and Employment launched e-Shram ‘One-Stop-Solution’ on October 21, 2024. This initiative integrates multiple social welfare schemes, allowing registered workers to view and claim their entitlements efficiently.
Currently, 14 central schemes have been integrated with e-Shram, covering sectors including migrant labour. Linked platforms include Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-dhan (PM-SYM), National Career Service (NCS), Skill India Digital Hub (SIDH), UMANG, DigiLocker, myScheme, and the Open Government Data Platform (OGD).
To protect migrant workers, the government has subsumed the Inter-State Migrant Workmen Act, 1979 under the Occupational Safety, Health, and Working Conditions (OSH) Code, effective November 21, 2025.
In related updates, Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya informed the Rajya Sabha that over 6.02 crore jobseekers and 54.27 lakh employers are registered on the National Career Service (NCS) portal. Since inception, more than 8.17 crore vacancies have been mobilized on NCS, offering career services, job matching, career counselling, and information on skill development programmes.
The e-Shram and NCS portals together aim to provide a digital backbone for India’s workforce, supporting unorganised and migrant workers while enhancing employability and social security coverage.
