Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called upon the Chief Secretaries of various states to ensure maximum public utilization of the “Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme,” which is set to be implemented across the nation until the financial year 2026-27.

During a virtual meeting held from New Delhi, the Prime Minister reviewed progress on several key projects, including metro rail construction, national highway development, mineral block auctions, and the implementation of the Surya Ghar scheme.

Addressing the meeting, Modi highlighted that the scheme, approved on February 29, 2024, aims to enhance solar rooftop capacity and empower residential households to generate their own electricity.

With a budget of Rs.75,021 crore, the scheme will be executed at the national level by the National Program Implementation Agency (NPIA) and at the state level by State Implementation Agencies (SIAs). He emphasized the critical role of Distribution Utilities (DISCOMs) in promoting rooftop solar installations within their jurisdictions.

The Prime Minister outlined key actions for DISCOMs, including ensuring timely installation and inspections of net meters, vendor registration and management, and fostering inter-departmental convergence to facilitate solar adoption. He directed state governments to raise public awareness about the scheme, enabling households to maximize its benefits.

The virtual meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Neerab Kumar Prasad from Amaravati. Key officials, including Energy Department Special Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand, TR&B Principal Secretary Kantilal Dande, Finance Secretary Janaki, and Mines Commissioner Praveen Kumar, participated from the Amaravati Secretariat. The discussions emphasized inter-departmental collaboration to ensure the scheme’s successful rollout.

The PM Surya Ghar scheme represents a significant step toward empowering Indian households with renewable energy solutions while reducing the financial burden of electricity costs.
