Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lauded the people of Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh for their inspiring collective efforts in water conservation, describing their initiative as a national model for drought-prone regions.
Speaking in the 130th episode of his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’, the first edition of 2026, the Prime Minister said Anantapur, long known for acute drought and chronic water scarcity, has demonstrated how community participation can bring meaningful change even in the harshest conditions.
The Prime Minister noted that instead of waiting for government assistance, local residents came together under the ‘Chethana’ initiative to restore water bodies and protect the environment. “The determination shown by the people of Anantapur proves that collective effort can transform even drought-hit regions,” he said.
Highlighting the achievements, Modi said that with the support of the state government, more than 10 tanks and ponds have been rejuvenated, while over 7,000 saplings have been planted as part of environmental conservation measures. These efforts, he said, are helping recharge groundwater, increase green cover, and strengthen long-term water security in the Rayalaseema region.
“The work being done by the people of Anantapur is truly commendable and serves as an inspiration for the entire country,” the Prime Minister remarked, adding that water conservation must become a people’s movement to ensure sustainable development.
Reacting to the Prime Minister’s remarks, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed happiness and thanked him for acknowledging the district’s efforts on a national platform.
“Respected Prime Minister, thank you for recognising the inspirational work of the people of Anantapur in your Mann Ki Baat programme,” the Chief Minister said in a statement.
Chandrababu Naidu recalled that water security is a key pillar of the ‘Swarna Andhra Vision’, forming one of the ten core development principles of the state government. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building robust water conservation infrastructure by integrating modern technology with traditional water management practices.
The Chief Minister said the Prime Minister’s appreciation would further motivate the state to intensify its drought-mitigation initiatives. He added that national recognition for Anantapur’s community-led model would strengthen ongoing efforts to combat water scarcity and promote sustainable water management across Andhra Pradesh.
