Minister for BC Welfare and Transport Ponnam Prabhakar on Tuesday called for the resignation of BJP MPs from Telangana in an effort to pressure the central government to place the state's 42 percent BC reservation laws in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution.

He emphasized that it is feasible to raise the quota for BCs and urged the Telangana BJP MPs to step down to increase pressure on the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre. In a statement, Prabhakar criticized Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao for claiming that including the 42 percent BC reservation in the Ninth Schedule was impossible.

‘The 42 percent reservation for BCs is achievable, as evidenced by the situation in the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu in the past. BJP MPs from Telangana should resign so we can fight why the reservation has not been implemented,’ he stated.

In the Indira Sawhney case, the Supreme Court clearly established that if states possess credible information and empirical data, they have the authority to make decisions regarding reservations. This is why the Congress government conducted a survey, which received approval from the cabinet, the legislative Assembly, and the Governor. The next step rests with the central government to make a decision, Ponnam Prabhakar said.

The Minister further criticized the BJP for misleading the people on the issue of BC reservations. During the elections, they promised to allocate the Chief Minister's position to a member of the BC community, yet they denied the opportunity for BCs to hold the CLP post. By not allowing BCs to hold the state presidency and instead appointing a candidate from the OC community, the BJP has revealed its true nature and demonstrated its feudal stance against BCs, he stated.

Ponnam Prabhakar urged the central government to make an immediate decision regarding the increase of the BC quota.
