Potholes plague Medchal roads

Motorists across Medchal-Malkajgiri district are facing increasing difficulties as several Roads and Buildings (R&B) roads have fallen into a state of disrepair. Widespread potholes, damaged road surfaces and poor maintenance have made daily commuting unsafe, with even light rainfall worsening the condition of key stretches.

Residents allege that authorities have failed to undertake timely repairs despite repeated complaints. Officials reportedly cite a shortage of funds in the R&B Department, leaving even basic patchwork pending. The district has around 384.08 km of R&B roads, many of which now require urgent maintenance.

Apart from potholes, overgrown roadside trees have extended onto carriageways at several locations, creating additional hazards for motorists. Busy roads connecting Gandi Maisamma, Medchal, Shamirpet, Mudu Chintalapally and Keesara continue to witness heavy traffic despite their deteriorating condition.

Among the worst-affected stretches is the Medchal Check Post–Kishtapur–Gandi Maisamma road. The absence of a service road along the Outer Ring Road between Medchal and Gandi Maisamma forces thousands of vehicles onto this narrow route every day. Heavy vehicles, cars, auto-rickshaws and two-wheelers use the road extensively, as it serves as an important link to Kukatpally, Miyapur and Hitec City.

Large potholes along the stretch have made travel difficult and increased the risk of accidents. Meanwhile, road development works worth Rs 167 crore have been sanctioned under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) to upgrade around 66 km of roads in the district, including key routes through Medchal, Gandi Maisamma, Shamirpet, Mudu Chintalapally and Keesara. However, work has not yet begun. Residents are demanding immediate temporary repairs, especially pothole filling on the Medchal Check Post–Kishtapur road, until the sanctioned projects are taken up.
