Rainbow Hospitals look to expand pediatric care to Northeast India

Rainbow Children’s Hospitals is set to expand its specialized pediatric healthcare to Assam. Founding Chairman Dr. Ramesh Kancharla met Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently. Rainbow’s plans to further develop pediatric healthcare facilities in Guwahati by building on the services currently available at Pratiksha Rainbow Hospital. Pratiksha Rainbow Hospital already operates in Assam. During the meeting, Dr. Kancharla also shared details of Rainbow’s recent success in managing one of the region’s most complex pediatric emergencies involving an eight-year-old child from Guwahati.

When conventional treatment options were exhausted, Rainbow’s specialized Pediatric ECMO Retrieval Team travelled from Hyderabad to Guwahati, initiated life-saving ECMO support at the referring hospital and safely airlifted the child to Hyderabad for advanced treatment. After spending 36 days on ECMO support, the child made a remarkable recovery and returned home.

The case marked one of India’s longest-duration pediatric ECMO retrievals and the first reported pediatric ECMO retrieval from North East India, highlighting Rainbow’s ability to connect its national clinical expertise with patients requiring urgent specialized care.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma appreciated Rainbow’s contribution through Pratiksha Rainbow Hospital and welcomed the group’s plans to strengthen pediatric services in Assam. He also extended support towards initiatives aimed at improving access to world-class healthcare across the region.
