‘Rajiv Swagruha’ colony turns hub for anti social elements

The Rajiv Swagruha housing colony in Kamareddy municipality has allegedly become a hub for illegal occupation and anti-social activities, leaving genuine beneficiaries struggling to live in unsafe and poorly maintained conditions. Residents have urged the district administration and police to intervene, evict unauthorized occupants, and restore basic civic amenities in the government housing complex. Construction of the project began in 2007 with plans for 17 residential blocks. However, only seven blocks were completed, with each block designed to accommodate 32 families.

Although the completed blocks can house 224 families, residents say that only 11 beneficiary families are currently living there. Some individuals are also accused of using forged documents to claim occupancy in the colony. According to residents, the absence of basic infrastructure and civic amenities has discouraged many legitimate beneficiaries from moving into the allotted flats. Taking advantage of the low occupancy, unauthorized persons have allegedly occupied vacant units, turning the colony into a refuge for anti-social elements.

The colony is also said to witness frequent incidents of public drinking and other nuisance activities. As a result, many eligible beneficiaries are reportedly reluctant to shift into the colony despite being allotted houses. The main complaint is that the colony lacks even the most basic civic infrastructure, including adequate roads, sanitation, and other essential public services. Residents allege that though they have repeatedly submitted representations to municipal authorities and raised their grievances during the district administration's public grievance programme, but little action has been taken.

Locals have appealed to the District Collector and the Superintendent of Police to personally inspect the colony, identify those without valid Rajiv Swagruha allotment certificates, and remove encroachers from the colony. They have also sought the immediate provision of basic infrastructure and improved security to make the colony safe and habitable.
