Roses, Thorns and Life

18-09-2025 12:00:00 AM

For his ardent devotees and followers he is Bhagwan Sriram and for many followers he is Sriram Sir. In one of his letters to one of his devotees in 1998, Sriram Sir talks about roses and thorns in life which is still and ever be relevant.

“Life sometimes appears to be a rose bush, having thorns. At some other times it appears to be a thorny bush having roses, but it is neither. In fact it is simply a plant having both the thorns and roses, each being as good as the other, each enhancing the beauty of the other. Let us love the plant as a whole, in totality, always being in love with roses, and more so with thorns. A thorn in fact is the throne, a royal throne where the rose sits like queen.

Similarly a tear-drop is a spiritual throne on which the scintillating smile dances. This fact seems to confuse us as we are surrounded by and submerged in instinct-based, dramatically necessitated eternal Maya. But once the dualistic contraries are fused into non-dualistic vision, our confusion disappears. Our sagging spiritual nerves must be constantly revitalised by this awareness.

One devotee prays to God

“Oh! God! I never pray for anything I do not have or I failed to have. All that I do not have is what I need not have or ought not to have since all that I need to have, you bless me with unasked. All that I now pray for is – please bless me with the wisdom to realize this fact. I am sorry, even this I do not pray for. If I really need that wisdom you will anyhow give me that unasked. You are such a wise, lovable and loving father.”

A devotee approached a saint and asked : “ can I see God ? “ Then the saint replied : “ What you want to see is what you are actually seeing. All that you see is nothing but God. You are not seeing anything else. All that you require is the necessary wisdom to realise the fact that what you are looking at, is what you are looking for.”

Each one of us is begging for alms at every door we come across not realizing that our begging bowl is made of gold. Each one of us is enveloped in non-dualistic Ineradicable communism. But inequality seems to be our birthright. Only instability appears to be stable. This is again due to instinct-based inexhaustible Maya !

Don't be worried much about anything. Good and Bad, Fame and Shame, birth and death, Loss and gain of any sort - do not ultimately mean anything. This world is full of dramatically intelligent but cosmically innocent children.

Just being what we are made to be is enough to make us burst into a break-dance. In this universe - no one is more dumb than a Jnani. Because he cannot speak anything that is understandable to the world. No one is a more inefficient teacher than a Jnani, since he cannot make the world learn anything. This is the eternal paradox; the eternal.enigma; the necessary master-stroke; necessary to make this drama a grand success.

Be Bold.  Be cheerful. Be careful. “ The Art of cycling is more important than the Art of selecting a cycle. The Art of living is more significant than the Art of choosing a life. Enjoy this great gift of life in every possible healthy way !
