APCC president YS Sharmila on Thursday said “time is up” for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of “weakening” the Indian economy, institutions, and public trust over the past decade. Sharmila said public trust in institutions has eroded and that dissenting voices from within the system are increasingly emerging.
“The Modi government inherited a strong economy, robust institutions, and immense public trust. But in just over a decade, it has weakened all three. Modi ji, your time is up,” she said in a post on X. Sharmila further said that Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has repeatedly warned that an economy built on alleged publicity, cronyism, and the concentration of wealth cannot withstand a major global shock.
According to the Congress leader, Gandhi’s warnings are “proving prophetic”.
“Unemployment is rising, household savings are declining, small businesses are struggling to stay afloat, and inequality has reached alarming levels,” she claimed.
Sharmila alleged that while the BJP government had mastered the “art of headlines and event management”, it had neglected the real pillars of economic strength—employment generation, productive investment, institutional integrity, and social cohesion. The Congress leader said the NDA government’s 12 years in power had left India far more vulnerable at a time of growing global uncertainty.
“The people of India are no longer willing to accept propaganda in place of performance. The gap between promises and reality has become impossible to ignore,” she said. She added that a government that built its reputation on grand promises now finds itself unable to evade accountability for the hardships faced by millions.
“The tide is turning, the illusion is fading, and the people of India are demanding change,” she said. Senior Andhra Pradesh BJP leader Sadineni Yamini Sharma said Sharmila and Rahul Gandhi speaking about the economy was like the “architects of policy paralysis delivering lectures on development”.
“The Congress left India among the world’s fragile economies, whereas under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India has become the world’s fourth-largest economy, a global manufacturing hub, a digital powerhouse, and the fastest-growing major economy. These are not BJP claims; they are globally acknowledged facts,” Sharma told PTI.
Sharmila says, “Modi ji, your time is up”, but the people of India heard that prediction in 2014, 2019, and 2024, and each time they gave PM Modi an even stronger mandate, the BJP leader said.
“The real question is not whether PM Modi’s time is up; it is whether Congress has any vision left beyond attacking Modi,” she observed.
While Congress “survives on headlines and negativity”, PM Modi continues to “deliver development, national pride, and decisive leadership”, Sharma said, adding that “that’s why India trusts Modi, not the Congress ecosystem”.
Further, the BJP leader alleged that the Congress keeps repeating the same script—EVMs, Rafale, Digital India, institutions, and the economy.
“Every time facts expose them, they move on to a new allegation. If India is supposedly collapsing, why are record numbers of highways, airports, startups, UPI transactions, investments, and welfare beneficiaries being generated every year?” the BJP spokesperson asked.
The truth is that Congress cannot digest “India’s rise under PM Modi” because it exposes what Sharma described as its own decade of alleged corruption, scams, and missed opportunities, she added.
