Connectivity is expected to improve further with the proposed commencement of the Mumbai–Sindhudurg route under the state’s regional connectivity scheme in the coming months, making travel easier for local residents and tourists alike.

Sindhudurg Airport in Maharashtra’s Konkan region has received approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to operate round the clock, including during low visibility and adverse weather conditions, marking a significant boost to regional air connectivity.

Operated by IRB Infrastructure Developers, the airport began commercial operations in October 2021. With the latest clearance, the facility is now certified for Instrument Flight Rules (IFR), allowing aircraft to take off and land even in poor visibility conditions. This approval enhances operational reliability and positions the airport for sustained growth in passenger traffic.

According to IRB Infrastructure, the DGCA nod also covers the implementation of satellite-based Required Navigation Performance (RNP) procedures along with a backup ground-based navigation aid. These systems provide precise instrument approach guidance to pilots while ensuring a dependable alternative in case satellite navigation is unavailable, thereby improving overall flight safety throughout the year.

Jai S Sadana, Chief Adviser and Head of IRB Sindhudurg Airport, said the move would strengthen airline confidence, support consistent traffic growth, and contribute to economic activity and tourism development across the Konkan belt.

The airport has also reported a steady rise in passenger traffic, recording close to 11,000 passenger movements in December for the first time. To support this growth, aircraft parking capacity has been expanded, with the number of parking stands increased from three to six.
