Solar wafer manufacturing unit coming up

Andhra Pradesh is poised to script a major milestone in India’s clean-energy transition with the establishment of the country’s first 6 GW integrated solar ingot-wafer manufacturing facility in Anakapalli district. The project marks a significant step in positioning India as a global player in the solar value chain, traditionally dominated by China.

ReNew Photovoltaics, a subsidiary of ReNew Energy Global PLC, will invest ₹3,990 crore to set up the greenfield facility at Rambilli in Anakapalli. This will be India’s first commercial-scale unit capable of producing ingots and wafers, the critical upstream components used in manufacturing solar cells and modules.

The proposal, originally announced as an MoU during the Andhra Pradesh Global Partnership Summit, has now been formally approved by the State Investment Promotion Board (SIPB) chaired by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. It will be placed before the state Cabinet for final clearance next week.

The project is expected to significantly reduce India’s dependence on imported solar components and bolster the nation’s target of achieving 300 GW of solar capacity by 2030. The facility is supported under the Government of India’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for boosting domestic solar manufacturing.

Spread across 130-140 acres, the plant is slated for completion by March 2026, with commercial operations beginning in January 2028. The unit will require a continuous power supply of 95 MW and 10 MLD of water, underscoring its scale and industrial significance.

Once operational, the project will generate approximately 1,200 high-skilled and semi-skilled jobs, giving a major push to local employment and advanced manufacturing capabilities in the region.

With this landmark investment, Anakapalli and Visakhapatnam are fast emerging as strategic hubs for solar and clean-energy technologies, reinforcing Andhra Pradesh’s reputation as one of India’s most attractive destinations for renewable-energy investments and green industrial growth.
