27-04-2026 12:00:00 AM

Why Rheumatology Awareness Matters

It is estimated that 1 in 5 people in India may suffer from some form of musculoskeletal or rheumatic condition.

Arthritis alone affects over 180 million people in India, making it more prevalent than many other chronic diseases.

Conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, Ankylosing Spondylitis, and Psoriatic Arthritis can lead to disability if not treated early.

Early intervention can prevent joint damage, reduce pain, and significantly improve long-term outcomes.

In a significant step towards raising awareness about rheumatological disorders, the Indian Rheumatology Association in collaboration with STAR Hospitals, organized a Rheumatological Diseases Awareness Walk on Sunday. The walk aimed to bring together healthcare professionals, patients, caregivers, and the general public to highlight the importance of early diagnosis and timely management of rheumatic diseases.

Dr. I. R. Varaprasad, President, Rheumatology Association, Hyderabad Chapter described rheumatological diseases as “ silent disruptors of life”.

He said that the walk was aimed to educate people that timely consultation with a rheumatologist can prevent lifelong disability. Dr. Liza Rajasekhar, Dean & HOD, Rheumatology, NIMS Hyderabad opined that awareness initiatives like this walk play a vital role in bridging the gap between symptoms like persistent joint pain, swelling, or early morning stiffness  and timely medical care.

Dr. Madhuri H. R, Sr. Consultant at STAR Hospitals, Nanakramguda made it clear that recognizing symptoms early and seeking the right care can help individuals lead completely normal, active lives.
