Strong winds coupled with heavy rain brought the newly constructed Charlapalli Railway Terminal’s railing at the roof of the entrance down on Saturday evening. No casualties were reported.
Prime Minister Modi had inaugurated the Charlapalli railway terminal on Hyderabad’s outskirts in January this year. It was built at a cost of nearly Rs 413 crore. This incident has once again sparked a debate on the quality of construction. Manohar Kappeti, a resident of Moula Ali asks, “There is no accountability and there was partial collapse of the railing. The incidence will be forgotten in a couple of days. Luckily, there were no casualties but what if there were?” In the meanwhile, videos of the incident went viral and many locals have been filming the site.”
Videos of the incident quickly went viral, prompting opposition leaders to Sharing a video of the incident, BRS leader Manne Krishank wrote, “Slight wind damages recently opened Charlapally Railway Station in Telangana which was inaugurated by Shri PM Modi. Fortunately no people were injured…”
The Cherlapalli Railway Terminal was developed to reduce the load of Secunderabad station which caters to more than a lakh of passengers every day. The Cherlapalli station form the outside looks plush but the incident has cast doubts on the construction. It may be noted that the opening of the station was done with much fanfare. Located near the Outer Ring Road, the terminal was expected to serve approximately 50,000 passengers daily, enhancing connectivity to the city’s outskirts and supporting regional development.
Cherlapalli to accommodate additional services
With the redevelopment work of Secunderabad Railway Station underway, the South Central Railway (SCR) would be relocating additional trains to Cherlapalli. The distance between Secunderabad and Cherlapalli is close to 15 km and passengers would have to travel the distance.
