Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy on Saturday reiterated the Telangana government’s commitment to the welfare and empowerment of weavers, stating that no artisan should be forced to abandon the handloom profession due to economic hardships.
Addressing visitors at the “Thread Pochampally” exhibition at HITEX, Uttam Kumar Reddy described the event as a celebration of the skill, creativity and dedication of thousands of weaving families whose craftsmanship has earned Pochampally global recognition. He praised the organisers, weavers, designers and all stakeholders for making the exhibition a success.
The Minister noted that more than 100 stalls at the exhibition are showcasing authentic Pochampally sarees, fabrics and contemporary handloom products. He said the event offers visitors a unique opportunity to witness live weaving demonstrations and gain a firsthand understanding of the traditional Ikat tie and dye technique, while interacting directly with artisans.
Highlighting the State Government’s efforts to strengthen the handloom sector, Uttam Kumar Reddy said initiatives are being undertaken to improve market access through direct marketing channels, exhibitions and e-commerce platforms, ensuring that greater benefits reach the weavers themselves. He stressed the importance of innovation and collaboration with designers and educational institutions to create products that appeal to younger consumers and international markets.
The Minister also underscored the role of branding, digital connectivity and online platforms in expanding the global reach of Pochampally products. He said empowering the next generation through training in design, entrepreneurship and digital commerce is essential for building a sustainable and globally competitive handloom economy.
Calling upon citizens to support the weaving community, Uttam Kumar Reddy urged people to purchase authentic handloom products, saying such support would help sustain weaving families while preserving Telangana’s rich cultural heritage for future generations.
