Telangana has emerged as a strong performer in India’s intellectual property (IP) landscape, securing the 5th position in patent filings, 9th in trademarks, and 13th in design applications, according to the Indian Intellectual Property Office (IP Office) Annual Report for 2024–25. The state filed 4,293 patents, 23,448 trademarks, and 979 designs during the year, reflecting steady growth in its innovation ecosystem.

In Geographical Indications (GIs), Telangana currently ranks 16th nationally, with 31 applications filed and 18 GIs registered, indicating significant potential for promoting region-specific products and traditional knowledge. Experts say that with targeted awareness campaigns and institutional support, Telangana can further strengthen its IP portfolio across all categories.

At the national level, India recorded a total of 1.10 lakh patent applications, with 61 percent being domestic filings, highlighting the rising confidence of Indian innovators. A record 1 lakh patents were granted in 2024–25, the highest in five years. Among states, Tamil Nadu led with 15,440 patent applications, followed by Karnataka with 8,371 and Maharashtra with 7,893. Uttar Pradesh filed 5,703 patents, Punjab 4,461, Andhra Pradesh 3,582, and Odisha 1,656. Union territories like Delhi and Pondicherry also saw growth in filings compared to the previous year.

Trademark applications reached 5.5 lakh, design filings 44,000, and copyright applications 43,000, reflecting strong growth across all IP categories. Overall, 7.49 lakh IPR applications were filed across the country, with average growth of 15–20 percent. GI filings doubled over the year, indicating growing awareness and participation nationwide.

The report also highlighted the IP Office’s digital initiatives, including the launch of the IP Sarathi AI Chatbot, which provides real-time guidance to startups, MSMEs, researchers, and innovators on IP registrations and procedures. “The introduction of the IP Sarathi AI Chatbot is a landmark initiative that will greatly improve accessibility and ease of doing business. It empowers startups, MSMEs, researchers, and innovators with real-time guidance on IP registrations and procedures,” noted Subhajit Saha, CEO of Resolute IP Services LLP.

He further added that Telangana’s strong performance in patent filings is encouraging, but the state has untapped potential in trademarks, designs, and GIs. With focused efforts and policy support, Telangana is poised to enhance its intellectual property footprint, contributing to India’s vision of a robust, innovation-driven economy.
