Temple sculptors seek revival of Sthapathi wing

Telangana's traditional Sthapathis (temple architects) and sculptors have urged the State Government to strengthen the Sthapathi Wing in the Endowments Department by filling long-pending vacancies and reviving the specialised wing responsible for temple conservation.

A delegation of sculptors trained at the Government College of Sculpture and Architecture, Tirupati, met the Endowments Commissioner on Thursday and submitted a representation highlighting the need for permanent recruitment. They said the Sthapathi Wing, once fully functional, has weakened due to the absence of regular appointments for the past 18 years.

The delegation pointed out that while Telangana is home to several ancient and historically significant temples, many are suffering from neglect and require expert conservation. They said the UNESCO World Heritage status accorded to Ramappa Temple reflects the State's rich heritage and stressed that similar efforts should be made to preserve and promote other historic temples.

The representatives also sought better infrastructure, qualified faculty and adequate staff for the Sculpture Training Institute at Yadadri-Yadagirigutta. They said strengthening the institute would create employment opportunities for sculptors while producing skilled professionals for temple restoration. The Endowments Commissioner assured the delegation that their concerns would be examined and appropriate action would be taken.
