Although it is highly recommended that a mastectomy be followed by breast reconstruction, it really depends on the overall health of the patient, the proposed treatment plan for cancer, and personal preference. There is no specific age limit for reconstructed breasts.

There are two types of breast reconstruction, Implant-based reconstruction includes the use of saline or silicone implants for the reconstruction of the breasts. Another one is autologous reconstruction-flap, it includes the taking of tissues from other parts of the body, like the abdomen, thigh, or back, for breast reconstruction.

Reconstruction type depends generally, your body type, previous treatments, such as radiation, and personal preferences. Breast implants are not made to last a lifetime. On average, they might last anywhere between 10 to 20 years.

Follow-ups regarding the condition of the implant with your doctor are absolutely necessary, and complications may require replacement surgery.

Breast reconstruction can be done either immediately after a mastectomy or can be delayed until after other treatments are completed, such as chemotherapy or radiation.

Reconstruction with an implant takes less time compared to others, typically taking 4 to 6 weeks altogether. On the other hand, flap reconstruction involves the transfer of tissues from other parts of the body, but this normally takes about 6 to 8 weeks. Your doctor will give you specific post-operative care instructions to help you have an easy and quick recovery.

Breast reconstruction is not only about the physical procedure, but it is also a psychological journey. Many find psychological support or counselling helpful as they go through this experience. Pre and post-operative care is very important in getting the best outcomes from the surgery.
