The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has set an ambitious goal of planting 25 lakh saplings across the city this year as part of the Haritha Haram initiative. Emphasizing the importance of public participation in the greening mission, Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi appealed to every citizen to plant and protect at least one tree under the slogan “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam.”
The campaign was formally launched on Wednesday at Shirdi Hills Colony in Kukatpally Zone, where the Mayor, along with GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan, inaugurated a plantation drive and a bore motor for sapling irrigation. They were joined by students and officials, who raised “Go Green” slogans and participated in tree planting activities.
Highlighting Hyderabad’s past recognition as a global Green City, the Mayor said the GHMC is striving to uphold that legacy. She announced that saplings would be distributed to every household, and public involvement would be crucial for both plantation and maintenance.
Commissioner Karnan reiterated that all GHMC zones and wards have been given specific targets, not just for planting but also for nurturing saplings. He stated that in many areas, the number of saplings planted would exceed official targets, focusing especially on species that suit public utility and climate adaptation. The event also saw the participation of Zonal Commissioner Apoorva Chauhan, UBD Additional Commissioner Subhadra Devi, Corporator Ravula Seshagiri Rao, and others.
