Trump’s ‘tacky’ burger stunt to mark ‘no tax on tips’ anniv

Washington: US President Donald Trump celebrated the first anniversary of his “no tax on tips” policy with a staged McDonald’s delivery at the Oval Office, later calling the move “tacky” and “embarrassing”. DoorDash driver Sharon Simmons, a Republican supporter, delivered the food on Monday. The White House noted Simmons saved $11,000 in taxes due to the policy.

At a recent Las Vegas rally, Trump admitted such political stunts are awkward. “We do these things in politics; they’re a little embarrassing... but we do them and you win by landslides,” he said. He likened the event to previous campaign moments, such as his 2024 appearance in a garbage truck.

Tweeple questioned the delivery’s authenticity. Critics said Simmons had testified before Congress in July to promote the same policy, identifying as a Nevada resident before moving to Arkansas.

DoorDash spokesperson Julian Crowley said on X the event was a planned celebration. Crowley defended Simmons against claims she was a “prop”, asserting she is a real driver who took part as the policy benefits her.

Meanwhile, a US court has allowed Trump to continue building a $400mn ballroom at the White House, ruling a day after a lower court continued to block above-ground construction on the site of the former East Wing. —AP
