Hyderabad Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar has cautioned young women and their families against rising cases of cheating and blackmail under the pretext of marriage. In a message shared on X, he said strict legal action will be taken against those exploiting women emotionally and financially after engagements.

According to police, Hyderabad She Teams have recently received complaints where men conduct traditional bride-seeing ceremonies and formal engagements to gain trust. Once the alliance is publicly announced, they grow closer to the woman, claiming the marriage is confirmed. Using emotional pressure, some allegedly coerce women into physical relationships. Later, they demand additional dowry or large sums of money, threatening to cancel the wedding if their demands are not met.

The Commissioner observed that many victims hesitate to approach police due to fear of social stigma, especially after relatives and friends are informed about the engagement. He stressed that remaining silent out of fear of losing reputation only encourages offenders and may result in lifelong distress.

Sajjanar advised parents to thoroughly verify the groom’s background, habits, behaviour and social circle before finalising marriage proposals. He also urged women to remain cautious even after engagement until the wedding is solemnised.

Victims facing dowry demands, coercion or blackmail should immediately contact Hyderabad She Teams on WhatsApp at 9490616555 or dial 100. Police assured complete confidentiality for complainants.
