Amid the intensifying political battle over Andhra Pradesh’s capital, former Rajya Sabha MP V. Vijayasai Reddy has levelled serious allegations against the state government, claiming that the Amaravati capital project is being used as a vehicle for a massive corruption racket. He announced that he would soon approach the court with what he described as documentary evidence of irregularities in the capital’s construction.
In a statement posted on social media, Vijayasai Reddy urged the public to move beyond the meaningless political debate over Amaravati versus Mavigun and instead focus on the alleged large-scale financial irregularities surrounding the capital project.
Claiming to be speaking as a responsible citizen, the former YSRCP leader questioned why Andhra Pradesh was still debating the location of its capital even 12 years after the state’s bifurcation. He also asked whether political parties intended to make the capital issue an electoral plan even in the 2029 Assembly elections and questioned why the recommendations of the Sivaramakrishnan Committee were not implemented.
Vijayasai Reddy alleged that the government was spending nearly Rs 50,000 crore on Amaravati’s development while inflating project estimates, resulting in an alleged corruption network worth Rs 15,000 crore. He claimed that commissions ranging from 25 to 30 per cent were being collected in the execution of construction works.
He further alleged that the present construction site is nearly 50 kilometres away from the historic Amaravati temple town and accused the government of using the name of Amaravati to legitimise the biggest corruption project.
