The issue of journalists’ safety has once again come to the fore in the Telugu states following the brutal murder of ABN Andhra Jyothi journalist Jaganmohan Reddy and an attack on Sakshi journalist Srinivas Rao. Senior journalists Pasham Yadagiri and K. Koteshwar Rao strongly condemned the attacks and murders on journalists, describing them as “cowardly acts.” The senior journalists led a candlelight rally in front of Osmania University Arts College on Thursday evening to protest the recent incidents.
A large number of journalists, social activists and students participated in the rally, expressing their deep anguish and anger. They demanded justice for the family of slain journalist Jaganmohan Reddy and called for stringent punishment to the culprits. Speaking at the protest, senior journalist Pasham Yadagiri criticized the governments for their failure in providing protection to journalists who expose uncomfortable truths.
Another senior journalist, K. Koteshwar Rao, warned that the situation has become extremely dangerous, with journalists facing threats, false cases and even murder for writing the truth. Young journalists who participated in the rally demanded the immediate enactment of a special law for the protection of journalists and swift action against those who attack them. The protest concluded with the participants paying tribute to the murdered journalist Jaganmohan Reddy.
