Following complaints that sewage was flowing through a stormwater drain into a nearby lake and agricultural fields in Kollur, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) Managing Director (MD) Ashok Reddy conducted a surprise inspection on Friday. He was accompanied by Cyberabad Municipal Commissioner Srujana and officials from the concerned departments.

During the inspection, officials found that the 9 MLD (million liters per day) Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) serving the government double-bedroom housing colony in Kollur was not functioning. As a result, untreated sewage was being diverted into a nearby lake and stormwater drain. Officials also informed the Managing Director that the area's rapidly expanding urbanization has created an urgent need for a stronger and more comprehensive sewerage network.

Ashok Reddy directed officials to immediately submit proposals seeking funds for the repair of the 9 MLD STP, which is under the maintenance of the Housing Department. He also instructed them to prepare a comprehensive sewerage master plan for Kollur and surrounding areas, including proposals for the construction of a major trunk sewer main to collect and transport all wastewater for proper treatment.

The Managing Director also called for the identification of suitable government land for the construction of a new Sewage Treatment Plant and directed officials to expedite the land allocation process to meet future infrastructure requirements. Ashok Reddy said the Water Board would coordinate with all concerned departments to implement a long-term solution to the sewage problems in Kollur.
