In a major boost to the Andhra Pradesh capital project, the World Bank is likely to release the second tranche of $200 million (approximately Rs 1,700 crore) for the development of Amaravati by the end of this year, a senior state government official confirmed on Thursday. The funds will accelerate the ongoing infrastructure and civic works in the capital region.
For the first phase of Amaravati’s construction, both the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) had committed financial assistance of $800 million each, totaling $1.6 billion (around Rs 13,600 crore). As part of this commitment, the World Bank had already released $207 million in March this year.
According to S. Suresh Kumar, Principal Secretary of the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department, about 50% of the first tranche has already been utilized for various projects. “We have received around Rs 1,800 crore from the World Bank and have spent more than half of it. As per the agreement, once 75% of the first tranche is utilized, we can apply for the second release. We expect to meet that target by December and secure the next installment,” he said.
Suresh Kumar added that both World Bank and ADB teams are monitoring progress every month, conducting field inspections, reviewing CRDA records, and assessing work quality. The latest World Bank report expressed satisfaction over the implementation pace and praised the establishment of the Environmental and Social Management Division within the project framework.
While the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) serves as the borrower, the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) is implementing the project, marking a renewed phase in Amaravati’s long-delayed construction journey.
